The Ensign
Why “The Ensign”?
The name The Ensign comes from the prophetic language of Scripture.
An ensign was something raised where it could be seen—a standard, signal or rallying point around which people could gather.
The prophets employ this imagery when describing God's work among the nations and the gathering of His people.
“And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel…”
— Isaiah 11:12
It is from this prophetic picture that The Ensign takes its name.
A Call to Gather Around Truth
For us, the ensign is not merely the name of an organisation or publication.
It expresses a purpose.
We believe God has given His Word so that men and women may understand who He is, recognise His work, discern the times in which they live and prepare for the fulfilment of His purposes.
The original description of The Ensign placed particular emphasis upon searching biblical prophecy for truths applicable to the generation approaching the final events described in Scripture. That conviction remains central to our work.
Yet an ensign does not call people merely to acquire information.
It calls them to respond.
Scripture repeatedly connects knowledge of God with faith, obedience and preparation. Truth is therefore more than something to be discovered intellectually. When God makes truth known, we become responsible for what we do with it.
Present Truth
The expression “present truth” is important to our understanding of Bible prophecy.
Every biblical truth remains true, but Scripture also shows occasions when particular truths assumed special importance because of what God was doing at that moment.
Noah's generation faced a message concerning the Flood. Israel was called to recognise God's work in its own history. The first disciples were required to recognise the Messiah standing among them.
In the same way, we believe Christians should ask not only:
What has God done?
but alsoWhat is God doing, and what has He revealed concerning what comes next?
This is why prophecy matters.
It is not given to satisfy curiosity or encourage endless speculation about dates and events. Properly understood, prophecy calls people to faithfulness.
An Ensign for the Nations
The prophetic vision ultimately extends far beyond any small group of Bible students.
Scripture speaks of God's purposes reaching peoples and nations and of a gathering associated with His kingdom.
We believe Christ will establish the everlasting kingdom foretold by the prophets. The original Ensign statement particularly drew attention to Daniel's prophecy of the kingdom that shall never be destroyed and to Isaiah's picture of the nations coming to learn the ways of God.
That hope gives direction to our studies.
The Ensign therefore points beyond itself.
It points toward Scripture, toward Christ, toward the fulfilment of prophecy, and toward the kingdom of God.
Our task is simply to raise the signal as faithfully as we understand it and invite others to examine the Word for themselves.
